Biography

Jack Smith was born in the Colony of Victoria (1851-1900)
This profile is part of the Smith Name Study.

John, (known as Jack) was born in Malvern on 30 Dec 1859 to William Smith and Harriet (nee Millard) [1], and was baptised at Holy Trinity Church in Oakleigh [2].

At age 20, he married Blanche Barclay (nee Moore) on 5 October1880 at the Registry office in Sandridge (now would be Port Melbourne) [3], and they had 11 children, not all of which survived to adulthood.

After their marriage, they mostly resided in and around South Melbourne. Jack was a Blacksmith by trade. By the census of 1924 we see them living at 53 Eastern Road, South Melbourne. The cottages along this stretch of road still exist. This home was the focal point of family life and many children and their partners ended up living here for a period of time. We also find family members ending up living next door at number 55 Eastern Road. John and Blanche's daughter Ida and her family lived here and Ida remained here until her death in 1975.

"Jack" passed away in hospital on 4 January 1929 aged 69. [4], and was buried at Melbourne Cemetery. His wife Blanche and young children are also buried with him.[5].

NOTE: (Finding these details took some doing, and so this note is to demonstrate how this understanding was gained. The sources for this profile, required starting with the Marriage, because of knowledge of both parents from their children. Trove gave us the year of death, and location in South Melbourne, which was confirmed with the name of his wife and children. That gave us his death certificate as below, even though it wasn't the lowest registered number for the year. His age at death and parents give us a birth certificate with an unknown first name listing. William and Harriet also had a Harvey and Emily, which is mentioned as siblings to John in the Trove article below. It is hard to work out why John is not mentioned with his siblings in other Trove articles around the deaths of his parents.)
