Biography

DAR Record says he was married 2Xs: 1) Unk, 2) Frances Dodd. He had a brother named Joshey Smith who moved back to Spartanburg SC and them to Burke Co NC to Franklin Co NC where his wife Elizabeth O'Shields Smith died.

John Buckner Smith bc 1758 VA d. 27 Oct 1851 Pickens District SC now Oconee Co SC. Listed in the 1800 Spartanburg Co SC census & 1810 Census Pendleton District SC (Pickens Co SC). He married Dianah Toney d/o Timothy Toney in Spartanburg Co SC 1789 and all his children are by her. He married 2nd Frances Dodd 18 Feb 1847 Pickens District SC. Buckner was still going back to Spartanburg in 1813-1815 selling the lands of Timothy Toney, his father in law.

Another Buckner Smith b. 1760 Orange Co NC d. 1818 Giles Co TN was in the 1800 Greenville Co SC census and he left a will. He married 1st Margaret Payne 26 Feb 1786 Orange Co NC and moved to Greenville Co SC where she died after having two children. Buckner then married in Spartanburg SC Dianah Grant and this is where the confusion comes in--she was a d/o Capt Wm Grant and Elizabeth Boone Grant who died in Pendleton District SC near the other Buckner Smith. I am sure these two Buckner Smith's were cousins and neither were sons of Christopher Smith and Mary Ann Mauldin Smith.

RE Buckner's Revo War pension: Buckner said in his pension in 1834 Pickens District SC that the only person that could vouch for his Revo. Service was Benjamin Gist. NOTE: if he was supposedly a son of Christopher Smith then his brothers Charles, Harmon and Jesse could have vouched for him as they lived within 20 miles of him. (additional notes from Linda Cheek)
