Man drowned caught in Rock crevice; Imprisoned in rock crevice at a depth of 20 ft,and unable to free himself,despite a terrific struggles was dreadfully clear which overtook James Smith (25) Of Lithgow, who was drowned in the Fish river near Tarana on Saturday after.Several attempts were made,Smith was with a party of fishermen spending the week end on fish river,about 12:30 Saturday afternoon he went for a swim in a pool about half mile below Mutton Falls Bridge on the Oberon side of the river.Smith was regarded as a strong swimmer and dived into the water and did not reappear. Immediately his companions A Dailziell, J Anderson and the latter son,20 year old John thought he was swimming underneath the water.The watchers on the bank became concerned of his absence and fearing he was entangled in tree roots they dived for him,45 minutes were occupied this way but their efforts were fruitless. Constable O’Brien joined the search and located Smith firmly wedged in a crevice in the rocks. The body was brought into Lithgow. Smith had resided with his uncle Mr G Smith of Methven Street and was a widower, his wife died a year ago. He was born in Scotland and had been in Lithgow for a number of years.
