Biography

According to his obituary, Joseph Smith was born in Westmoreland, Pennsylvania, in 1799. While the accuracy of the obituary is in doubt, it is certain his parents were Anthony Smith, Jr., and Hannah Sooy. His father had moved to southwestern Pennsylvania during the Whiskey Rebellion, himself a Revolutionary War veteran. He named his namesake son, Joseph Sooy Smith, after his wife's maiden name. Joseph relocated to Ohio between 1820 and 1822 when he married Julia Ann Rhodes. Joseph joined a quaker meeting house in Westland, close to his home in Smithfield, Ohio. In 1830, Joseph relocated to Center Township, in Monroe County. He retired to McConnelsville in the same county where he died in 1877.

Hello - Joseph Smith is my ancestor and regarding the Obituary you refer to above, you are correct in questioning it's accuracy. There was another Joseph Smith living in Morgan County, Ohio during the same time period, born in PA, who died on 12 Sep 1877, but who was married to a Nancy. He's the one who shows up on Find A Grave and in the newspaper obituary, and is NOT the son of Anthony Smith and Hannah Sooy. It's sad that so many people on Ancestry + have tied the two together! I researched in Morgan County and when you look at their children and other records they are two distinctly different people. Just thought I'd toss in my two cents and glad you weren't convinced.
