Biography

Martha was born August 7, 1861. She is the daughter of Buford Smith and Eliza Jane Lemons.

Excerpts from "I Remember Callahan - History of Callahan County" - Sponsored by the Callahan County Historical Commission: "H.C. and (Grannie) Windham as she was called, later married and raised their grandchild, Anna Mae. He moved to Tecumseh where he lead the singing, was Secretary / Treasurer for the church services and Sunday School in the Tecumseh two room school house for many years."

Obituary Early Resident of Callahan Dies

Mrs. Alice Grantham, 77, who had lived in Callahan County nearly 60 years, will be buried today in the Tecumseh Cemetery.

She died Tuesday at her home in the Dudley community.

Mrs. Grantham, a member of the Baptist Church since childhood, was a widow of H. C. Grantham. He died last January.

Funeral services will be conducted at 3 o'clock Thursday afternoon at the grave by Rev. Dick Bright, pastor of the Baptist Church at Potosi. Burial will be directed by the Bennett Funeral Home of Ovalo.

Mrs. Grantham settled in the Tecumseh community as the bride of Calvin Windham, whom she married when she was 18 years old. They were the parents of five children, three of whom survive, Roy Windham of Dudley, Ed Windham of Westboard, Calif., and Mrs. Edna Early of Red Bluff, Calif. Other survivors are 10 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

Mr. Windham died in 1901 at Tecumseh, and his widow married Mr. Grantham in 1917. Her home had been in the Dudley community since that time.
