Biography

Bob was born in 1877 at Alfred, Ont., son of Henry Smith (1837-1918) and Mary Eliza Sargent (1836-1910)[1].

Bob grew up on his parents' farm in Alfred Township (50 acres Concession 4, Lot 10, NE quarter, purchased 15 Aug 1872 for $300)[2][3][4].

On 11 Jun 1903, Bob married Grace Elizabeth Dunning at Treadwell by license[5]. However, they had no children.

Bob engaged in farming...

Following the wedding, Bob and Grace purchased a farm near the village of Bearbrook, Cumberland Tp., Russell Co., Ontario, Canada[6][7].

Following the death of sister-in-law Emily Melissa (Dunning) Cassells, Grace and Bob formally adopted 20-month-old niece Audrey Emily Cassells in Nov 1929[8]. Audrey was raised on the Bearbrook farm as Audrey Smith.

Bob and Grace continued to live on the farm at least until Grace got ill then passed away in Dec 1947[9][10][11]. Audrey had moved to Ottawa for work (lived with Grace's brother James) so was well placed to help care for Grace at James' home then at St. Vincent Hospital. It isn't clear where Bob lived between 1947 and 1952 - did he stay on the farm and visit Grace? Did he move to James' home with Grace (and Audrey) and, if he did, return to the farm or stay in Ottawa following Grace's death?

Bob passed away 16 Oct 1952[12][13][14][15] and was buried 18 Oct 1952[16][17].
