Biography

Mattie, daughter of James W Smith and Emma E. Howland,[1] was born in 1881.[2] She grew up with her parents and sister Carrie in Holyoke, Hampden, Massachusetts, where her father was the superintendent at the paper mill.[3]

In 1905, she married William Frederick Irrgang[4] with whom she had a child, Ruth, in 1907.[5] The family moved to Windsor Locks, Connecticut, where her husband was a draftsman in a factory.[6] The marriage failed. By the time of the 1920 census, Mattie declared herself a widow[7] (even though William was still alive and had remarried[8]) and was a telephone exchange operator boarding in Becket, Massachusetts, without her daughter.[7]

Mattie's story is unfinished as no further records have been found. She may have remarried and be buried under a different surname.
