Biography

This profile is part of the Whiting Name Study.

Isabel, John whitings wife is mentioned in his 1617 Will as living in St. Boltoph's Parish, Boston, Linciolnshire. [1]

Disputed Children

John Whiting had 6 children who are listed in the Parish records of Baptisms of St. Boltoph's, Boston, Lincolnshire. There is no Robert, Sarah, Stephen, Joseph or Nathaniel listed in this baptismal record or later in John Whiting's Will.[2] Unless there is some form of overwhelming proof beyond the Baptismal record and the Will of John Whiting, these children should be disconnected from these parents.

What to do with Isabel? Create a new mother for Nathaniel and keep this Isabel as the wife of John Whitting? Further research is needed.

The first clue that "Sarah Isobel" is a myth is that it was illegal for English commoners to have multiple given names in the 16th century and most if not all of the 17th century. As suggested by Joe Cochoit's comments, there was no such person as "Sarah Isobel Smith" who married John Whiting. John Whiting's first wife, and the mother of all of his children, was Margaret (Bonner) Whiting. They were married 22 Dec 1586 at St. Botolphe's Church, Boston. As shown by the parish register of St. Botolphe's (searchable on free-reg.org.uk), she was buried 27 July 1601. John Whiting (later Mayor of Boston) married (2) Isabel Rigg 10 Feb 1602/3 at Louth, Lincolnshire. The wife named in his 1617 will was undoubtedly this same Isabel (so there is no room for any "Sarah"). There is no mention in the parish register of any children by Isabel, and no wonder, because she was not some teenage bride. Rather she was the widow of Rychard Rigge, whom she had married 13 Nov 1584 at Louth. Her maiden name was Harrison; very likely she was the Isabell Harrison who had been christened 9 May 1563 at Crowe, Lincolnshire. The entire nonsense about Isabel having been born in "Bocking," the daughter of John and Sarah Smith, should be deleted from this profile.

Probably she is also the "Isabell Whiteing" who married (as her third husband) Thomas Cheales 17 July 1619 at St. Botolphe's.

Her parents need to be disconnected, then she can be merged into Isobel Unknown. The wife of John Whiting of Boston was named Isobel - Sarah is an internet error. Also, a major error, they are not the parents of William Whiting of Hartford, Connecticut.

Unknown-334118 and Smith-1794 do not represent the same person because: Too many issues. The first name and LNAB on the other profile are incorrect. She was not named Sarah, and she was not named Smith. She is not the daughter of John Smith and Sarah Neale who lived at the wrong time, wrong place, and whose will makes it clear this identification is incorrect. When the parents on the other profile are disconnected, it can be merged into this one so that the LNAB is Unknown and not Smith.

Unknown-334118 and Smith-1794 appear to represent the same person because: John Whiting only had one wife; Isobel was her middle name. You should put discussion of any remaining fact disputes on the single profile.

Smith-1794 and Smith-76935 appear to represent the same person because: same vital info. same father. same person

UNKNOWN-11544 and Smith-1794 are not ready to be merged because: Need more actual birth and death info as well as clarifying parents for UNKNOWN-11544.
