John Smith was born August 4, 1773, in Goshen New York, a son of John and Sarah Smith. John was the first husband of Nancy Elmer, daughter of Nathaniel Elmer and Anne (Thompson) Elmer. On August 20, 1797, Ann Mariah Smith, the daughter of John Smith and Nancy Elmer was baptized at the church at Goshen, New York. Ann was eleven months and three weeks old at the time of her baptism. [1]

John died November 18, 1799, and is buried in the Slate Hill Cemetery of Goshen, Orange county, New York. [2] After John's death, his widow, Nancy, married Joshua Conkling. They became the parents of a son, William Conkling. [3] Nancy died February 9, 1854, and is also buried in the Slate Hill Cemetery. [4]
