Hannah Smith was born in 1845 in Southcoates, a crowded suburb then on the eastern edge of the growing port city of Hull, on the Humber Estuary in the East Riding of Yorkshire. [1] In 1851 she was with her parents and four siblings, still in that area and aged just five [2]

She is the daughter of James Smith and Mary Ann Hardbattle.
