Born 1843 Elstronwick

John was born in 1843 in Elstronwick, a small village, well to the east of Hull in the plain of Holderness, but not long after, his family moved to Southcoates, a crowded suburb then on the eastern edge of the growing port city of Hull, on the Humber Estuary in the East Riding of Yorkshire

John is the son of James Smith and his wife Mary Ann Hardbattle.

In 1851 John was with his parents and six siblings, in the Southcoates area of Hull, aged 8. We are not told whether any of the Smith children are at school.^[1]
