  • James Edward Smith (AKA: David L. Smith) passed away on March 25, 2005. I promised him I would attempt to manage his website. I will not be able to answer any questions, but I can make corrections, if sent the necessary information. This database was his "work in progress" and is not nearly complete in nature. He documented wherever possible. Lack of sources results from his not having independently verified information provided by others. (Rootsweb.com family tree)

1820, they were in Pendleton, SC and in 1830 in Greene, TN

Looking for any information on Polly Smith born about 1805 in NC, married James Bear. Their son & daughter, John Bear and Perlina Jones filled out Eastern Cherokee applications but were denied. In these applications they stated that James Bear their father was full Cherokee, and that Polly, their mother was half. Polly's parents were James Smith born in SC in the 1730-1775? and Nancy Burden born about 1789 in VA. In 1820 they were in Pendleton,SC, and in 1830 in Greene, TN., 1850 Harlan,KY., 1860 Liberty, IN., and 1870 Franklin, IN.

My ancetors lived in Virginia, SC, NC, TN, KY and IN.

James Smith fought with Marion Anderson, the Swamp Fox during the Rvolutionry War.He was born about 1755 and died about 1830 in SC. His son James married Nancy Burden, a Cherokee and they gave birth to William, James, Waddy or Walter, David, Eliza, Peggy, Nancy and Polly. James died 30 Nov 1873 in Harlan Co., KY.Nancy died after 1860 in Grant Co., IN.

The family from Nancy Burden on are mentioned in the Cherokee by Blood records.

Anyone who might have information about this family would be a godsend.

Thanks.

Jim Smith

My original acnestor in America smuggled himself into the country before the Revolutionary War and mingled with the Gypsy, etc. population in SC. He fought in the war with the Swamp Fox and was given land in SC. He married a Cherokee woman.

Am trying to find records of his existence.

Any suggestions or directions would be greatly appreciated.

Jim
