Oral tradition has it that Ananias' wife, Phoebe, was talking to his sist er Margaret between 1900 and 1910 and stated that she and Ananias had deci ded to raise their children as white. She also told Margaret that whatev er she and her husband, a Beck, could do whatever they wanted. This caus ed a schism in the family that has lasted to this day (2004). Margaret rai sed her children as mixed race or mulatto or African American.

All Smith men married white or Native American women, most Quakers and alm ost all involved in the anti-slavery effort. See Waddy (Walter T.) Smith f or more details.

Ananias's son, Charles Revere did not tell his son, Charles about this ancestry, nor any of his other children. He did hint at it to his Grandson, Jim Smith, in a conversation one summer in the mid 1960s. When Jim ask ed his Grandfather about his ancestry, Revere responded that his father 's name was Ananias (where he was buried, the family farm, etc.) and mentioned the various men Ananias knew - all of whom were African American. When Jim queried his father about the family ancestry, he responded that he cannot understand why anyone would say such a cruel and terrible thing about Grandpa Smith. Charles went on to write that Ananias was very light skinned but he could not remember ever meeting any of Ananias' sibling s.

According to Ralph Kirkpatrtick, a Fairmount, Indiana historian and retir ed teacher, there was a rumor in the county to not marry anyone with the n ame Smith because they had black blood. He also stated that after Anani as built and painted his new barn, painting the name Smith Corn Farm, so me teenagers sneeked onto the property late one night and painted over t he word corn with the word 'coon'.
