Biography

Research Notes

There are two Manning Smiths in the 1850 Census for Henry County, Indiana. One is the son of Cornelius Smith, b Ohio and the other is the son of Ira Smith, b Indiana.

The 1880 Census reports Manning's parents as having been born in Virginia. Manning and Caroline are living in Hazel Hill, Johnson, Missouri with daughter A. M. Smith.[1]

The 1900 Census says his father was born in North Carolina.[2]

The 1910 Census gives only "United States" for his father's birthplace, and his mother's as West Virginia.[3]

The Manning Smith who was son of Cornelius married Virginia James and died in Fort Wayne, Indiana.[4]

Son of Ira Smith and Susanna. Ira Smith has a wife named Susanna in the 1850 Census for Prairie Township, Henry, Indiana: Ira Smith age 35 b Indiana; Susanna Smith age 28 b Ohio; George Smith age 8 b Indiana; Manning Smith age 7 b Indiana; Mary Smith age 5 b Indiana.[5]

Second husband of Sarah Caroline Powers.
