Item Details: ARRIVAL OF THE NELSON.
Messrs Patrick Henderson's line ship Nelson, with thirteen saloon passengers and 425 immigrants, arrived yesterday from Glasgow, and was towed in as far as the Quarantine Ground, where she was shortly after boarded and cleared by the Health and Immigration Officers.
The Nelson has made a fair passage of eighty-five days from port to port, and is under the command of Captain Leslie, who commanded the ship Otago last year.
During the voyage 11 deaths and 6 births occurred. Deaths : October 4, Daniel Swanston, aged 6 months, teething; October 21, Mary Arthur, aged 7 weeks, debility ; October 26, Stephen Russell, aged 20 mouths, convulsions; October 27, John Yarr, aged 11 months, mesenterica; and Mrs Arthur, 25, acute tuberculosis; October31, Win. Hall, aged 20 months, teething: and Mary Thompson, 15 years, debility supervening upon whooping-cough; November 2, Samuel Thompson, aged 6 years, iaves mwsenterica; November 10, David Sneddon, aged 11 months, aphtheas stomatis: November 16. Elizabeth Robinson, aged 5 years, rheumatic perienitis; November 18, Alex. Ramsay, aged 6 mouths, teething; and Wiihelmina Hutchinson, 11 months, debility supervening upon diarrhoea; December 14, Lawrence Sutherland, aged 21 years, bronchitis; December 22, John Paterson, bronchitis.
Births: November 16, Mrs M'Ewan, of a son; November 19, Mrs Carruthers, of a daughter; November 27, Mrs Smith, of a son; December 10, Mrs Nicoll, of a son; December 12, Mrs M'Cauley, of a daughter; December 23, Mrs M'Connell, of a son.
She left the Tail of the Bank on the 1st of October, and took her departure from Tuscar on the 6th; light variable winds, mostly from the northward, were experienced until picking up the N.E. trades in lat. 18 on the 23rd, which were light and lost on the 28th in lat. 6. Thence doldrums until crossing the equator in 27.19 when she got the S.E. trades next day, and were carried to 30 S. on the 15th of November. Thence light variable winds until the 19th, when she got the first of the westerlies and crossed the meridian of Greenwich on the 22nd and that of the Cape on the 20th in 45.11. Passed the meridian of the Leuwin on the 15th inst., and made the Snares at 4.30 p.m. on tho 24th, having run down her easting in about 47, and made the Heads yesterday morning. Dr Crawford, surgeon-super-intendent, reports favorably of the immigrants; and Miss Stoof, matron, also reports favorably of the single women. The Nelson will be removed from the lower anchorage to-morrow, when the immigrants will be landed[11].
