Biography

Andrew was born about 1765.

Sources

  • Andrew Smith is found on the marriage records of his sons, Isaac and Samuel Smith, in 1809 Woodford Co, KY.
  • Speculation is that Andrew Smith was a "Long Hunter". This is due to the presence of the family of Charles Skaggs in the 1812 KY Militia, Capt. Robert Paxton's company. Isaac and his brother Samuel are listed there. I believe Andrew was also part of the Elk River Intruders as the family of Charles Skaggs is found there as well. There are well documented Long Hunters in Rockcastle Co, KY near Isaac and Nancy in 1810.

Robert Smith located on North Buffalo, where Walter L. Wharton now lives, in 1756, and it appears his children were mature when he came here. He died in 1778. His wife was Mary, and their children were John, William, Robert, Andrew, Elizabeth, Mary and Isabella. It is pretty well established that this John located on Rock Creek and is the ancestor of the Smiths of that community. John’s wife was Elizabeth McComb, and their children were John, William, Thomas, Robert, Samuel, Jesse, Elizabeth and others; William, son of Robert, Sr., married Mary, daughter of John Cunningham, Sr., and lived at the home place. Their children were Margaret, Samuel, Robert, William, Cunningham, Jonathan and Anne. He died in 1783. It was his son Robert who sold this place to Watson Wharton in 1796 and moved to Tennessee. In fact, it appears that many of this Smith family moved to the west. Cunningham married Abigail Rankin and moved to Illinois. Andrew, the son of Robert, Sr., located on the Reedy Fork.

Andrew lived on Back Creek in Orange Co, NC. He can be found living among his brothers William and John. They were all sons of Robert Smith of St. Mathew's Parish, NC.

Isaac Smith, Andrew's son, lived near KY Militia Gen. William Smith whose wife was Elizabeth Singleton. Elizabeth was a daughter of Col. Richard Singleton (of King's Mountain) and his first wife, Ann Whitesides.

Living next to Andrew Smith on Back Creek are two Whitesides men, James and Samuel.

The Whitesides family is also found among the history of Glade Hollow Fort, where Gen. William Smith is said to have been born.

Additionally, on the same page of the 1809 Woodford Co, KY marriage records we find a Sally Smith who married a John McMinnimy. A John McMinnimy was a neighbor to Andrew Smith on Back Creek.

Additionally, Ezekiel Chance is found in the 1810 Rockcastle Co, KY census. Ezekiel lived near Andrew Smith near Back Creek as well.
