Biography

Birth

Lucy Smith was born about 1822 in Allestree, Derbyshire and was christened there on 9 March 1822, the daughter of John and Elizabeth Smith[1]

Marriage

Lucy Smith, of Allestree Parish, Derbyshire married Leonard Haffner, of St Weburgh's Parish, Derby, Derbyshire on 8 November 1846, by Banns[2]

Lucy was Leonard Haffner’s 1st wife and it appears that she spent most of her life in Allestree – at least from birth to marriage and possibly up to her emigration. Her father was John Smith, a weaver, her mother’s name is unknown. She had been in Victoria about 3 months at the time of her death after a 9 month illness. Apparently she fell ill either on the voyage out to Australia or shortly beforehand. [3]

Research Notes

  • Lucy's parents are possibly John Smith and Elizabeth Handley married by Banns on 31 May 1822 in Derby, Derbyshire[4][5]
