Biography

Dorthula Smith was born about 1829 in Illinois. Her parents may have been Francis Smith (c 1780 - aft 1850) and Tabitha (Spencer) Smith (c 1790 - c 1860). The date of their marriage license was 6 May 1817 in Edwards County, Illinois. However, the record did not include other information, such as a marriage certification returned (date of actual marriage, there didn't seem to be a record of a return of the certificate).^[1] Another online record indicated a date of 8 May 1817, Edwards County, Illinois, which may have been the marriage date, but no image was available online.^[2]

A middle name or even initial for Francis Smith could be helpful. However, apparently relevant records vary in that regard. M may have been the middle initial from the marriage record; Parker a middle name from descendant information; T as a middle initial from a possible 1850 census match, in the same Mulberry, Franklin County, Arkansas locale as Dorthula (Smith) and Marion Haleburton.^[3] Also in the Smith household in the 1850 census record, 5 households from Dorthula (Smith) and Marion Haleburton (c 1829 Tennessee -), was William Smith (c 1834 Illinois - ),^[4] of unknown, if any, relationship.

Darthula presumably married Francis Marion Haliburton (who went by Marion) in about 1848, perhaps in Texas or in Arkansas, where a child John Haleburton was born in about 1849. Marion apparently passed away--or they may have previously divorced--some time before 11 Aug 1867 when Dorthula remarried.

On 11 Aug 1867, Dorthula Hollyburton married W. J. Phelps in Van Zandt County, Texas. W. J. Phelps may also have been known as William Phillips, which is how he was enumerated in the 1870 census.

In the 1870 Texas Van Zandt census, three children were enumerated with Dorthula and her then spouse:

It seems they were enumerated under the name of their step-father. However, they appear later to have used of the surname, Halliburton (spelling may vary). Whether or not their surnames at birth were Halliburton remains questionable, particularly as regards George, as a descendant Y-DNA test results showed haplogroup Q-M242 (Huff).

Dorthula passed away at an as yet undetermined place and date, after 1870 when she was enumerated in the census. No death record has thus far been identified. If a record exists, it might appear under her maiden name, Smith, or married names Haliburton (spellings vary), Phelps or Phillips, and there may have been additional as yet unidentified spouses or surnames.
