Eleanor Jane Mary Smith was born on May 26, 1877 in Chipstead, Reigate, Surrey, England, United Kingdom, daughter of Mary Ann Smith, single mother. Eleanor was baptised on September 2, 1877 in Chipstead.^[1]

In the 1881 census Eleanor (age 3) was the living with her grandparents Henry Beadle & Eleanor Smith in Chipstead, Surrey, England. Her mother was employed as a general servant and lived elsewhere. Her grandfather was a farm labourer.^[2]

Her mother married George Cox when she was 6 years old.

In the 1891 census Nellie (age 13) was the step-daughter of George Cox in Camberwell, Southwark, London, England. Her step-father was a Ground Labourer.^[3]

Eleanor married John William Abbott (born about 1874 in Walworth, Surrey; son of William John Abbott and Isabella Tanton) on August 26, 1895 in Southwark, Surrey. She named William Smith as her father. It's possible her biological father's first name was William, although his surname would likely have been different. Their known children were:

Eleanor Abbott (age 83), wife of John W. Abbott, died on September 20, 1960 in Colwood, British Columbia, Canada.^[7] She was buried in Murrayville Cemetery.^[8][9]
