John was born in 1824 at Woodnesborough or Ash next Sandwich, Kent, England and baptised on the 21st November 1824 at St. Nicholas, Ash next Sandwich, Kent, England, the son of Thomas Smith and Mary Smith of Ash[1].
It is likely that John joined the Royal Marines at Chatham, Kent in 1846[2]
On the 8th May 1848, John married Ellen Winget at St. James, Staple, Kent, England. John Smith, bachelor, Marine? of Chatham, son of Thomas Smith (labourer) and Ellen Winget, spinster of Staple, daughter of William Winget (labourer). Witnessed by George Smith and Sarah Ann Smith[3][4].
John was a corporal in the Royal Marines in 1851[5] and 1853[6].
John was discharged from the Royal Marines about 1853.
In 1853 John he was occupied as a blacksmith.
By 1855, John & Ellen had become Methodists, and John was occupied as a labourer[7].
In 1856 John & Ellen were living at Luton, Kent, England[8].
From 1857-1861, John was occupied as a blacksmith.
John's wife Ellen died aged 66 years in 1891and was buried on the 25th February 1891 at All Saints, Luton, Kent[10]
On the 12th October 1891, John married widowed Ann Doble at St. Mary Magdalene, Gillingham, Kent, England. John Smith, 67, widower, pensioner of Middle Street, Coye or Cage Lane, Gillingham, son of Thomas Smith (labourer, deceased) and Ann Doble, widow, 69, of Coye or Cage Lane daughter of Luke Brown [sic] (labourer, deceased). Witnessed by William Rose & Mary Elizabeth Rose[11][12]N.B. Luke Brown was her step-father.
On the 13th March 1905, John was admitted to Barming Heath Asylum, Barming Heath, Kent, England[13].
He passed away aged 81-82 years on the 12th May 1906[13][14] at Barming Heath Asylum, Barming Heath, Kent, England and was buried on the 17th May 1906 at Maidstone Road & Palmerston Road Cemetery, Chatham, Kent, England. Plot Section UU Grave No. 267 (U)[15]

John consistently stated that he was born at Woodnesborough in all census until 1901, when he stated he was born at Ash. It is likely he was born at Ash but moved to Woodnesborough as a baby, soon after his father died.
There was no baptism of a John Smith (son of Thomas Smith) at Woodnesborough, and the baptism of John Smith at Ash, showed that his parents were resident at Ash at the time of his baptism (his father Thomas was also resident at Ash when he died in 1825).
Both Fold3 and FindMyPast searched for Royal Marines attestation, discharge and pension documents, but not found.
At The National Archives, there is another John Smith b. Kent circa 1824 who joined the Royal Marines in 1844, however he was discharged in 1853 at an invalid[31], so it seems unlikely it was John Smith bapt. 1824 at Ash, as he was occupied as a blacksmith from 1853-1857. Both sets of attestation documents would need to be obtained to see if they have any additional information.
