Biography

Ann Jane Smith was born about 1827 in the Parish of Maybole, Ayrshire, Scotland. She was later baptised on the ------ at -------. Ann was the daughter of Robert Smith and Margaret Griffin.

In June of 1841 on Census night, Ann (x yrs) was living with parents and siblings in Welltrees Street, Maybole.^[1]

At the time of the 1851 census, Ann Jane (now 19 yrs and unmarried) along with her younger sister Martha (18 yrs, unmarried) were visiting the household of 86 yr old Alexander Sutherland (Hand Loom Weaver from Caithness) situated at 16 Kirk Street, Clarksons Closs, Calton. Both sisters were working as winders. Their younger brother Robert (15 yr old Warper) was living with their married older brother Alexander in Duke Street, Camlachie, Glasgow in the Parish of Barony

Ann married William Withers, a cotton carder at Glasgow on 31 Dec 1852. They were both residing in Calton, Glasgow in the Parish of Barony at the time.

Ann and William had at least six (6) known children:
