Biography

Early Life

Middlesex (historic flag)
Elizabeth (Smith) Buck was born in Middlesex, England.

Elizabeth Katherine Smith was born on August 28th 1875 at 12 Watson's Mews in Marylebone, London to William Henry Smith, a carman, and Emma Simmons, a tailor. She was probably baptised at The Catholic Church of Our Lady of the Rosary which was next door to her parents' home. [1] [2]

Elizabeth's Birth Certificate

In 1881 Elizabeth was living at 4 Virgil Place in Marylebone with her parents (both of whom were working), her elder sister Annie and younger brother Albert. She and Annie were attending school at the time. [3]

Then a decade later, in 1891, Elizabeth was living in a three room dwelling at 45 Great York Mews. There she was living with her parents, elder brother and three of her younger siblings. [4]

Married Life

On September 10th 1894 Elizabeth married Ernest Buck at the Paddington Registry Office. They were both living at 50 Arthur Mews at the time. [5] [6]

Elizabeth then appears, mis-enumerated as "Ellen", on the 1901 census living in a one room household at 37 Lisson Street, Marylebone. She shares the house with her husband Ernest and her two children - Ada Louisa and Annie Buck. [7]

Next in 1911, Elizabeth filled out the census form for the family, stating that they occupied nine rooms at 70 Salisbury Street. At this point they had 7 children (as well as 4 who died previously) with the eldest being Annie who was aged 18 and the youngest being Samuel who was aged just 3 months. [8]

Later Years & Death

A Photo of Elizabeth in her Later Years

Elizabeth was widowed in 1935 and then lost two sons in the Second World War. In 1939 she was living in the Daventry Street slums of Marylebone alongside her children Norah and Albert. She died in her house at 30 Daventry Street in Marylebone on January 23th 1961 and her funeral was on January 30th of that year. She was buried in Plot 2602G at Kensal Green Cemetery. [9] [1] [10] [11]

A short obituary was then published in the Marylebone Mercury on February 3rd 1961 detailing that she had been living in Daventry Street from the First World War up until her death and that she was survived by five daughters and one son, Albert. [12]

Research Notes

1) There is some ambiguity around the spelling of her middle name - some (her parents and husband) spelt it "Katherine" whereas many enumerators and registrars preferred the more traditional spelling of "Catherine".

2) At the time of the 1901 census, Elizabeth was seven and a half months pregnant with her child Ellen. It may very well be possible that the two were confused by the enumerator if a note of the unborn child was made on the original form (these were all destroyed).
