Vernon was born in 1884.
At the 1891 census the seven year old Vernon C Smith was living in Burnham Ulph with his parents, William S and Rebecca, and his older brother Horace WR. William was 40, born in Ouse Bridge[1]; Rebecca was 50, born in Huntingdonshire; Horace was 11, neither he or Vernon had an exact birthplace.[2]
From the GRO birth registration, his mother's maiden name was Richardson. Note that the spelling in the GRO Index is Vernom.
Horace WR was Horace William Richardson born in 1879 in the Mitford District.[3]
At the 1901 census he was living in Salhouse with his father, now William T. He was working as a drapers clerk. William's place of birth was given as Downham, which is the closest large town to Ouse Bridge; Vernon's place of birth was East Winch, which was in the Freebridge Lynn district.[4] How they came to move from Burnham Ulph to Salhouse is an interesting question.
Vernon's death was registered in the second quarter of 1902 in the St Faiths district, which includes Salhouse.
Horace was baptised at East Derham in 1879, his parent were William Thomas and Rebecca; William was a Railway clerk which would explain Vernon's birthplace as Ouse Bridge, and perhaps the subsequent moves.[5]
"Rose" Richardson married William Thomas Smith at East Dereham in 1878.[6]
William was almost certainly the son of James Chapel and Ann Smith, baptised at Hilgay in 1850. His father was a Station Master.[7] On his birth registration his mother's maiden name is Coppin.[8] James and Ann married in London in 1844.[9]
From the 1851 census James was born about 1819 in Bodmin, Cornwall. Ann was born about 1820 in Cardinham, Cornwall. They had two sons born in Woolwich, Kent, and two in Hilgay.
James was the son of John and Elizabeth Smith, baptised at Bodmin in 1818.[10]
