Biography
William was born in 1846[1] and was christened on 19 November at All Saints, Gainsborough, Lincolnshire[2]. He was the son of Henry Smith and Mary Broadley. He passed away in 1912[3][4].
In 1873 at St Peter in Eastgate, Lincoln, Lincolnshire, William married Mary Matilda, daughter of Arthur Trollope and Elizabeth Lucas[5][6].
William and his brother Francis were partners in Chert Quarry Proprietors, Bakewell up till August 1894. William then carried on alone[7]. With Harry Rowland, he was a partner in Broadley Smith and Rowland, timber merchants up to 1900[8].
William used Broadley Smith as his surname from the mid 1870s.
