Biography

This profile is part of the St Helens, Lancashire One Place Study.

Jane Smith was christened on 14 Jun 1835 at the church of St Mary the Virgin in Prescot, Lancashire. She was the daughter of Ann Smith of Prescot, and was born out of wedlock.

By June 6th 1841, Jane and her mother were living in Eccleston, Lancashire in the household of George Ranson, a publican. Her mother was working as a female servant, perhaps in the pub.

Research Notes

Possibly the niece of Alice (Sephton) Hesketh - there was a Jane Smith about the right age in Alice's household in 1851, but since that Jane was also in Alice's household in 1841, she'd have to have been enumerated twice in 1841 to be her.

No possible deaths in Prescot district 1841-51. Could be a housemaid in Pennington in 1851, but the age (14) is a bit off.
