Biography

Cross of St George
George Smith was born in England.

George Smith was born in August 1849 in Southwark Christchurch, Surrey, England, United Kingdom. He was the second child born to Benjamin Fletcher Smith, a hatter, and Mary Ann Knight. [1]

In 1851, according to the England census, George was 19 months old and living with his parents and older brother at their home on John Street in Christchurch, Surrey, England. His father was employed as hat finisher. [2]

In 1856, when he was 6 years old, his family immigrated to Australia. After a 3 months journey on the Moorsefort they arrived in Melbourne, Australia on July 2, 1856. [3]

George married Jane Nash in the Free Church Manse, Hobart, Tasmania on October 17, 1870, in Hobart, despite both George and Jane being from Melbourne. [4][5]

His brother Thomas was married a week earlier.

Marriage notice
SMITH—NASH.—On the 17th October, at the Manse, Hobart Town, by the Rev. Nicholson, D.D., Mr. George Smith to Miss Jane Nash, both of Melbourne. ("The Illustrated Australian news for home readers", p. 199) [6]

They had the following children:

  1. George Oliver Smith, born 3 August 1871 in Hobart[7]
  2. Martha Annie Smith, born 26 July 1873 in Hobart[8]
  3. Alice Maud Smith, born 3 March 1876 in Hobart[9]
  4. Jessie May Smith, born 30 April 1878 in Hobart[10]
  5. Nellie Maria Smith, born 28 June 1881 in Hobart[11]
  6. Clara Jane Smith, born 20 July 1884 in Hobart[12]
  7. Thomas William Smith, born 20 July 1884 in Hobart[13]

Like his father and brother, George was also a hat maker. [14]

Research notes

George was said to have 4 siblings, Will (married to Harriet), Tom, Annie and Nellie although these names correspond to three of his own children. I question the accuracy of this data.

Update 16 Aug 2021 - there are at least 6 children in the family supported by birth and in most cases by death records.
