Mary was born during 1832 in Vermont. Her father was Josiah Smith and her mother died shortly after her birth. She was raised by an aunt and uncle, Mr. and Mrs. Wilcox, who lived near Lowell, Massachusetts and later resided in Wisconsin. Mary was a school teacher. She volunteered to be an Army nurse during the US Civil War and served in the field with the 10th Wisconsin Infantry and in U.S. Army hospitals. She received a pension for her service as a nurse volunteer in 1890. From the 1900 US Census record, her marriage to George B Bradley can be dated to about 1864. For a while they lived near Frankfort in the Dakota Territory and later in Beloit, Wisconsin. She died in 1910.
