Sad loss of Life in attempting to save others.------On the 5th of December the Shipwrecked Mariners' Society had before them-----Captain, the Honourable Francis Maude, R.N. in the chair---the following lamentable occurrence which took place at the entrance of the port of Santander on the 2nd of November, involving the loss of seven Englishmen, who were drowned while endeavouring to save the crew of the Spanish schooner ' Union, ' wrecked at that spot. Their names were: ---George Freeman, Master of the British steamer ' Mino ', of Liverpool; William Smith, Master of the steamer ' Woolington ', of Newcastle; J.M. Reed, A.B., ' Mino '; H.Thomas, ' Woolington ', and Messrs. Webb and Brooks, divers, employed on the wreck of the Spanish schooner ' Cid '; Mr. March, the British Vice-Consul, in writing of the occurrence, said:---"These heroes manned the ' Minos ' lifeboat on the hearing that a vessel was in distress and proceeded to the rescue. It was blowing a fearful gale from the west, and a heavy sea kept rolling from the Atlantic upon the doomed baroque, which, still afloat, but in the midst of the breakers, clung desperately to her moorings. She was going to pieces, and the crew were perishing, as the devoted band of brave Englishmen approached in their frail craft. They paused a minute on the edge of the surf, and then, taking advantage of a momentary lull, dashed in to save---but, alas! all perished, The weight and strength of the sea was too great. A huge wave threw the boat against the wreck, and nothing more was seen. Vessel, boat, and men disappeared; and as yet not a single body has been recovered."
