Obituary
EDWIN SMITH.
Death occurred on Tuesday night at his late residence in Manly of Mr. Edwin Smith. Deceased was 78 years of ago and had retired to Manly to spend the eventide of his life. He was born at Bandon Grove and lived almost all his life in the Williams River district, his old home being at Munni.
There survives a sorrowing widow (Manly), two daughters, Mrs. Ryan (Manly) and Mrs. Borthwick (Manly). and two sons, Grafton (Munni) and Lindsay (Bulliac). There are also 13 grandchildren, also one sister. Mrs. Isabel McDonald (Sydney).
Deceased's mortal remains were brought to Christ Church, Dungog on Wednesday night. On Thursday morning at 10.30 a.m., Rev. D. T. Rees conducted a short and impressive service. In the course of his remarks, the Rector said that the life of the late Edwin Smith was a fine example to all Australians. He went into the wilderness and by his activity and foresight helped in building up the district and town. He showed that success in life was attained by energy and economy, and that was an invaluable lesson to all.
After the service, the cortege moved off to Bandon Grove cemetery where deceased's mortal remains were laid to rest. The Rector read the last prayers.
In the death of the late Mr. Smith, there passes one of the greatest figures in the pastoral industry of the State. His name was known and respected throughout the whole of New South Wales. Few men there were who knew the cattle industry better than he. He belonged to the old school of hard workers and idleness was something unknown. In his younger days he was one of the leading cricketers of the Williams and round the oval to-day his name is still frequently mentioned by those who remember his deeds with the willow. He was a supporter of the game all his life. and always gave encouragement morally and financially to that grand sport.
Deepest sympathy is extended to the sorrowing widow and family in their sad bereavement.
