Biography

Franklin, the oldest of six sons, was born in 1878. He was the son of Alfred Smith and Marie Duschene.

Eldest son of Alfred and Mary Smith.

He was a deputy sheriff and had been informed of a disturbance among some Indians at a mining camp. A man had been drinking until he became mean. When Mr. Smith arrived, the drunk man immediately shot him with a rifle. He lived only a few hours.

Frank, 22, lived with his parents and siblings in Plumas County, California, when the 1900 census was taken. His father, Alfred, was a gold miner born in Kentucky and his mother was born in Paris, France.^[1]

Frank was enumerated twice in 1910: once with his family in the April 1910 census of Plumas Township; and again with his new wife and brother. Christopher, in the May 1910 census of Mineral Township.

Frank, 32, lived with his mother and five siblings in 1910 after his father died in 1904.^[2]

Vallie traveled to Plumas County, California, to visit her cousin, Evia A ( ) Smith. wife of Franklin Howard Smith. Frank's brother, Christopher Erwin Smith, lived with Frank and his wife, Evia. Frank and Chris were gold placer miners.^[3]
