A LAW STUDENT'S TROUBLE.
Lloyd J, Smith Is Acquitted of Assault Upon a Little Child.
Lloyd J. Smith, a nephew of Councilman Uselma C. Smith, of the Fifteenth ward, and a student of law at the University, was up before Judge Reed in the Criminal Court yesterday, charged with assault and battery on little 5-year-old Mary Callahan, whose mother alleged that he had knocked tho child down. It appeared from the testimony that the child, though young In years, was experienced In the use of vile words and In misconduct. Smith was taking a stroll along the street one afternoon when he was approached by tbe child, who spat upon him and called him names. The little girl's action angered the young man and he brushed her aside, when she slipped on the sidewalk and cut her knees. He then told Sarah McLaughlin, tbe servant girl, how the accident had happened and asked her to tell the child's mother of its misconduct.
The jury acquitted young Smith of the charges made against him.

Yacht Vala Runs Aground
The cutter yacht Vala, owned by Lloyd J. Smith, of New York, Capt. Neilson, grounded on the outer bar off Ocean City, N. J., yesterday morning while endeavoring to enter Great Egg Harbor Inlet.
The Ocean City life-saving crew boarded the craft and floated her with considerable difficulty. Damage was slight.
