Notables Project
Hobart Smith is Notable.

Hobart Smith was an Appalachian American old-time musician often remembered for his virtuosic performances on the banjo, and had also mastered various other instruments, including the fiddle, guitar, piano, harmonica, accordion and organ.

Hobart McKinley Smith was born on May 10, 1897 in Saltville, Smyth, Virginia, the oldest son of eight children born to Louvine and Alexander King Smith.[1]

In 1900, Hobert (3), was a single son, in the household of King A Smith (29) in Rich Valley District, Smyth, Virginia, United States. [1]

Hobart (20) married Pearl Smith on November 28, 1917 in Sullivan, Tennessee.[2]

Smith was first recorded in 1942 by Alan Lomax for the Library of Congress and four years later by Moe Asch of Smithsonian Folkways. Smith once joked, "I can play anything except a car bumper and a barbed-wire fence," and he was not exaggerating. [3]

After his beloved Pearl died in 1958, Hobart married Brookie Faye (Meadows) Smith (1912-1990) in Tazewell, Virginia in 1959.

Hobart died on January 11, 1965 in Saltville, aged 67 and was buried in Smith Cemetery in Smyth County, Virginia.[4] [5]

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Hobart by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Hobart:
