Biography

Richard Smith

Taxpayer in Exeter in 1716. On Dec 10, 1774 Richard Smith purchased 90 acres of land in Brentwood on what is now Old Hwy 125. The tract was composed of 50 acres of Capt. John Gilman, of which 20 acres were laid out James Burleigh and 30 acres were laid out Nathan Taylor. 40 acres were laid out Richard Smith. Richard said "to my well beloved son, Joseph Smith, this 24th day of June, Anno Domini, One Thousand Seven Hundred and Fifty one in the 25th year of His Majesty's Reign, our most gracious sovereign, George the Second, by the Grace of God." Richard died and was buried April 22, 1765, in Exeter.
