In 1851, according to the England census, Thomas was 4 years old and living with his parents and his younger brother at their home on John Street in Christchurch, Surrey, England. His father was employed as hat finisher. 
In 1856, when he was 10 years old, his family immigrated to Australia. After a 3 months journey on the Moorsefort they arrived in Melbourne, Australia on July 2, 1856. 
Thomas married Jane Johnston on October 10, 1870.  Together they had at least 2 children:
SMITH—JOHNSTON.—On the 10th October, at Lansdowne-terrace, Easternhill, by Mr. G. L. Surber, Thomas Smith, of Carlton, to Jane, youngest daughter of Mr. Peter Johnston, Emerald-hill.
He died on August 05, 1925 in Richmond, Victoria, Australia at the age of 78 years.
