  • Excerpt from correspondence from Sherry Suedkamp, gg granddaughter of Dr. Horatio Nelson Gray (1825-1908) and ggg granddaughter of Rev. Horatio Nelson Gray.

"I wanted to let you know I came across information in the archives of the Georgia University library that pretty much confirmed my hunch that Jane Gray (Horatio's mother) married William A. Carr of Athens, GA. According to University records, a student had to be at least sixteen to enter the university as a student. In "The Southern Banner" newspaper printed in Athens, Georgia and dated, Friday, April 9, 1841 in the list of students, as a freshman was H.N. Gray and his place of residence was listed as Mr. Carr's house of Athens, GA. I can't tell you how relieved I was to find this little piece of confirmation that the Carr track was the right track."

The preponderance of evidence leaves little doubt that Jane Smith Gray, the mother of Dr. H.N. Gray, married Col. William A. Carr in Georgia.
