Janet “Jessie” Smith was born in January 1831 and baptized on 13 Feb 1831 at Lochwinnoch, Renfrewshire, where her father was a Church of Scotland minister.
She became a close friend of Janet Kirkwood Orr, wife of Rev. George Clazy, minister of Paisley High Church. After Clazy’s wife died from consumption, age 29 in 1861, the clergyman asked the friend to marry him. Their wedding was held in 1863; they were shown together in the 1871 and 1881 censuses at the High Church Manse in Paisley. Jessie was then listed in the 1891 census at Prestonpans, East Lothian, home of Agnes Steven Orr Clazy and William Crawford McEwan.
Jessie died at Paisley in 1897, age 66. Her estate was sizeable. Probate was granted jointly to her four adult children, Marjory Barr Smith Clazy, Robina Bell Clazy, Robert Smith Clazy & William Oliver Clazy.
