Biography

Died in an epidemic along with his son Sanford.

"The History of Rutland, Vermont 1761-1861" by Dawn D. Hance states on page 394 concerning the battle of Bennington, "John Smith of West Rutland and his four eldest sons, Daniel, John, Joel and Silas, also participated in the battle. Daniel Smith's widow, Sarah, stated in Pension testimony that he was assigned to guard the prisoners and often told her that: . . . the meeting house in which the prisoners were confined was so crowded, that as to be in danger of breaking and that the prisoners from this fact, became alarmed and attempted to escape from the windows and that numbers were shot. . ."
