West Point News Date: Friday, June 3, 1949

Lasst Rites Held Wednesday For Mrs. Lillie Smith

Last rites were held Wednesday at the Shawmut Baptist church for Mrs. Lillie Smith, 72, who died at her residence last Tuesday.

Mrs. Smith passed away early Tuesday morning unexpectedly although she had been in failing heath for the past several months. She was outstanding in her faith and devotion to her family, her church and the many friends left to survive her passing.

Born in Harris county, Georgia, in 1876, Mrs. Smith was a member of the Shawmut Methodist church. Burial was in the Shawmut cemetery with Johnson and Company in charge.

The funeral services were conducted by the Rev. J. N. Floyd, Rev.J. D. Dollar and the Rev. L. E. Humrich. her grandsons servd as pallbearers.

Mrs. Smith is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Louis Moree, Japan; Mrs. Arthur Ray, River View; Mrs. D. W. Daniel, Shawmut; seven sons, Shirley Sledge, Philadelphia; Dewitt Sledge, Shawmut; Mrcus M. Sledge, Fairfax; Avery Sledge, Atlanta, Pierce Sledge, LaGrange, Claude Sledge, Langddale, and Carton Sledge, LaGrange.

She leaves her father, John Smith of West Point Route 2, ten brothers, one sister, 25 grandchldren and five great-grandchldren.

The Town of Shawmut is now part of the City of Valley, Al. Lillie Mae Smith was the first child born to James Franklin Smith & Sarah Cade Parker out of 12. She was married first on October 14, 1894 to Thomas Hill Sledge & they had 8 children.
