Biography

Family History by Aunt Carrie (Spade) Mellott - Grandma's mother was Delilah Smith Hess, daughter of Reverand John Smith [born 17 JUL 1803 in Bedford Co., PA and died 19 JUN 1865 in Bedford Co., PA. He was buried in Bethel Cemetery, Mann Township, Bedford County, Pennsylvania,] who used to ride horseback all over Buck Valley, Brush Creek, and around Needmore preaching at the Christian churches. His (Reverand Smith's) wife was named Polly, but I don't know her last name. That's all I know about Grandma's ancestry. I have no dates or names farther back. According to my aunt Eva Bedford Miller, the Hess's came from Switzerland. Source: Spade's Newsletter, June 2006.

DEATH OF GRANDMOTHER HESS At 7:20 Thursday morning, May 11, Mrs. Hess breathed her last at the home of her son-in-law, Amos Plessinger, in Bethel township, at the advance age of 75 years. She was a daughter of the late Rev. John Smith and leaves to mourn her loss one son, Jacob L. Hess, and three daughters, Mrs. B. F. Bedford, Mrs. Amos Plessinger and Mrs. Lewis Sipes, all of this county. She was the mother of eight children, twenty-eight grand-children and sixteen great- grandchildren her husband and four children having preceded her to that home where she is now at rest. She was ever ready, night or day to administer comfort to the sick and dying. Early in life, in her girlhood days, she embraced the christian religion, joined the christian church, lived a faithful, consistent and devoted life, and having so lived, death, when he confronted her, had no terror. With fortitude and christian resignation she waited the Master's good time when he should take her unto himself. Her remains were followed to their last resting place in Cedar Grove cemetery, on Friday last by a large concourse of sorrowing relatives and friends.
