Biography of Rev. John W. Smith

John was born on Jul. 17, 1803. He was the first child of James Smith andNaomi Deneen of Bedford County Pennsylvania, He was married twice. His first wife's name is unknown. They had the following children: Delilah, Maria, and Levi. His second wife was Sophia Deshong. They had Elisha, Sarah, William, Catherine, Dennis and Elizabeth. Preacher John, as he was called, was active in preaching and also organizing and starting new churches. [1] Preacher John passed away on Jun. 19, 1865. He is buried in the Bethel Christian Church Cemetery. [2]

In the 1850 U.S. Census for Southampton, Bedford County - John Smith and wife Sophia Smith and son Elisha Smith are neighbors of Abram May & Mary May and son George Sephus May.

Elisha Smith is only four years older than George Ford May in 1850.

REV JOHN W.3 SMITH (JAMES2, JOHN1) was born July 17, 1803 in Bedford Co., PA, and died June 19, 1865 in Bedford Co., PA. He married (2) SOPHIA DESHONG. She was born February 14, 1812 in Wayne County, New York, and died September 17, 1901 in Bedford Co., PA.

John Smith (Preacher John) was the first born of James and Naomi Smith, June 19, 1803. His first wife, whose name we do not know, was the mother of Delilah, Maria, and Levi. His second wife was Sophia Deshong and she was the mother of Elisha, Sarah, William, Catherine, Dennis and Elizabeth. Catherine died Sept. 3, 1884, age 19 years, 5 months, 11 days.

The 1850 census showed daughter Maria married to William Crawford, in house No. 41, close to the balance of the family living in house No. 39, and John Smith's father, the patriarch James, in house No. 43. Daughter Delilah married Jeremiah Hess and lived in the vicinity.

The 1843 tax records show John Smith owning 271 acres of land and paying $2.66 in taxes. In 1844 his tax liability was reduced to $1.06.

John Smith was active in organizing and conducting services of the Christian Churches in this area for more than 27 years. He assisted in organizing the following churches: Fairview, 1838; Mt. Hope, 1840; Prosperity, 1843; Pleasant Grove, 1843; Bethel, 1845; Greenfield, 1854. He was active in the Southern Pennsylvania Christian Conference, serving on the Committee of Ordination in 1847, and as Conference President in 1852. The Conference Centennial in 1944 celebrating 100 years of Conference history commented in their report as follows: "John Smith. One of the best known of the early ministers."..the Conference over twenty years, passing away in 1865. A number of his descendants still live in the community. His bible is still to be found in which it is said he marked each text to be preached from."

In the 1852 Conference record reporting on church subscriptions to the travelling preachers, the following comments were recorded: "Elder Miller travelled 1200 miles, received 50 dollars. Elder John Smith reported travelled considerably, received trifling."

Rev. John Smith, born July 17, 1803; died June 19, 1865. Age 61 years, 11 months, 2 days. Buried Bethel Cemetery; m. 1st: Ax. Unknown; m2nd: Axx. Sophia Deshong, born Feb. 14, 1812; d. Sept. 17, 1901; bur. Bethel Cemetery.

According to 1850 census of Bedford Co., Pa. House No. 39: John W. Smith, age 45; Sophia Smith, age 37; Levi Smith, age 21; Elisha Smith, age 19; Sarah Smith, age 18; William Smith, age 12; Catherine Smith, age 10; Dennis SMith, age 7; Elizabeth Smith, age 4.
