Born May 14,1842, in Beirut, Syria. Died February 14, 1933, in Rochester, N. Y. Father, Rev. Eli Smith (B.A. 1821, D.D. Williams 1850); son of Eli and Polly (Whitney) Smith, of Northford, Conn. Mother, Maria Ward (Chapin) Smith; daughter of Moses Chapin (B.A. 1811) and Esther Maria (Ward) Chapin, of Rochester. Uncle: Rev. Henry B. Chapin (B.A. 1847).
Wilhston Academy. Second prize in mathematics Freshman year and first prize Junior year; prize for poem Sophomore year; Latin oration appointment Junior year; salutatorian at graduation; a Class historian Senior year; member Brothers in Unity, Gamma Nu, Alpha Delta Phi, and Phi Beta Kappa; graduate member Elizabethan Club and Wolf's Head. Taught in Lenox, Mass., 1865-66 and at Hopkins Grammar School 1866-67, tutor in mathematics at Yale 1867-69; taught at Mount Auburn Institute, Cincinnati, 1869-1874; member of faculty at Bowdoin 1874-1890 (professor of mathematics 1874-1887, history and political science 1887-1890); Larned professor of American history at Yale from 1890 until retirement in 1910 and since then professor emeritus; LL.D. Bowdoin 1894; editor of "The History of Yale University" in Universities and 'Their Sons (1898); fellow 01 Royal Historical Society of Great Britain; member American Historical Association, Rochester Historical Society, Rochester Chamber of Commerce, Founders and Patriots of America, New Haven Colony Historical Society (vice-president 1900-1911), and Congregational Church, Brunswick, Maine; honorary member Maine and New London County Historical societies.
Married September 7, 1869, in Wolcott, N. Y., Sarah Elizabeth daughter of John and Sarah (Filkins) Munn. No children.
Death due to coronary occlusion and artenosclerotic heart disease Buried in Grove Street Cemetery, New Haven. Survived by wife (died March 12, 1933).
