William H. Smith was born to John and Olivia (Humphrey's) Smith of Monroe County, WV, on 25 July 1845. He married Josephine Ballard c. 1874. They had four children before Josephine died, quite young, of tuberculosis.
Sadly, William also lost his son Randolph to a freak accident, and his daughter Amanda while she was giving birth to her own child Amanda J.
Of their children, only Nora survived, and she grew to a ripe old age.
Much of the following research is now finished. According to Margaret Ballard in her Genealogy of William Ballard, published in 1957, William's parents were John and Olivia Smith, and this is almost certainly true.
Genealogies who link this William Smith to any other parents are incorrect. -gsm 2019
RECENT FindaGrave note has William H. Smith (with dates as listed above) linked as the Spouse to Josephine. This is a new link. As I remember it, their markers are not near one-another. However, his age at marriage is consistent with this marker.
1) 1850 US Census, Monroe Co. Family of John and Olivia T. Smith. In the household are four children: Lorenzo P., WILLIAM (5), Mary, and Samuel. This William was born circa 1845, the presumed birth date of Our William per the grave marker. Internet genealogical "chatter" gives this William as "William H." Smith.
[The record of Randolph's birth to W. H. Smith (which I just found!) is mis-dated: it says 1888, but it should read 1880, as Josephine died in 1882, unless I have her death date wrong. This is possible. Probably needs an eyeball view of the actual record to see if the 1888 date is actually correct.}
W. H. and J. Smith lost a child (C. Smith) to cholera 9 Aug 1878. This is a forth child of which I was not aware.
Josephine Ballard's family is also in that Census; family number 117. Lewis and Nancy (Pence) Smith was family 83. Not far from one another, although most of the families were close to one-another.
2. I can find NO WILLIAM SMITH (yet) in any Monroe Census year who was born in 1845, EXCEPT the WILLIAM SMITH born to John and Oliva T. Smith on the 1850 Census. I have not seen them yet on other Census years.
3. At the time of his marriage to Josephine William H. Smith gives his age as 29. This places his birth circa 1845 almost squarely.
Although it is the inclination of other genealogists to link our William with Lewis and Nancy (Pence) Smith, I have yet to see any firm sourcing for this connection except un-sourced internet family trees. It seems almost certain now that Margaret Ballard is correct, and that the parents of this William H. Smith are John and Olivia Smith of Monroe.
I now believe Olivia T. Smith is in Smith Cemetery, not Keaton. She has three children there with her and her husband. None of them is William H.
This John Smith (of Olivia) was born to Wm. and Elizabeth (Miller) Smith. William was born 1787 died 1861; Elizabeth b. 1792 d. 1863. Check Everett Miller's work for this family.
Sadly, birth records for Monroe, Mercer, Greenbrier and Summers are incomplete. Same with death records.
