Research Notes

Both FindaGrave [1]and his record of death [2]give Lorenzo Preston's (or L. P. Smith's) parents as John and ELLEN Smith, not John and Olivia. This needs to be sorted out. The name "Ellen" appears on his record of Death an the unsourced FindaGrave bio, which may have drawn from the same record. Either...

1) (least likely) the Lorenzo P. (Preston) Smith who married Hanna Marie Henshaw is a very different Lorenzo P. Smith who was son of John and Olivia T. (Humphreys) Smith, or...

2) (possible) He's the same man, but different mother, or...

3) (most likely) The death record is wrong.

Lorenzo Smith on 1860 Census with parents John and Olivia[4], age 18.

Lorenzo P. Smith is given on the roster of Confederate Troops, age 23, etc., serving with G. B. Chapman's Light Artillery (Monroe Battery). [5] Also with Capt. W. H. Chapman's light artillery and Capt. J. K. Booton's Company, Dixie Artillery.
