John Smith and his wife Margaret (last name unknown) were the parents of Mercy Smith, wife of Benjamin Clarke of South Kingstown, Rhode Island. The will of Daniel Smith of Portsmouth, Rhode Island, proved 15 July 1707, mentions his "sister Mercy Clarke, wife of Benjamin Clarke, of Kingstown."[1]
In "The Earliest Shermans of Dedham, Essex," Michael Wood identified Mercy Smith, first wife of Benjamin Clarke, as a daughter of John Smith and Margaret (last name unknown).[2] No specific source is cited for this identification; it may be derived from cited publications or manuscripts by Morrison, Glazier, or Eldridge.[3]

Note that the 1695 christening record cited here isn't consistent with birth in 1636 or having a child born in about 1650.
In the absence of sources and with such slender evidence, let's not presume that we can merge profiles of men named John Smith.
