Burial

Date: 3 FEB 1902
Place: Rothersthorpe, Northamptonshire
Hi David
I am researching the family tree of my nephew who is a Kilsby. I think Frederick George Kilsby married Mary Ann Boyson (born 1859) in July Ð Sept 1879 in Hardingstone. I think that her father was Thomas who married Charlotte Smith in Jan Ð Mar 1853 in the Northampton area. (Charlotte already had 2 children).
Thomas was born in Rothersthorpe in 1816 -1821 - there seems some confusion in the Censuses - to Thomas (born about 1791) and Elizabeth.
There was a time when Frederick's son William Henry affected to use the surname Boyson-Kilsby. He died in mysterious circumstances in the Bahamas in about 1941 or 1942.
I have just done this through Ancestry.co.uk. I would be grateful for any help that you can give me

David,
How nice to get your message - there aren't many of us interested in the Boyson Family!
In my records I have Thomas Boyson (1817 - 1902) His burial is recorded in the Rothersthorpe Parish Register on 27 January 1902 but I have an actual date of death as the 22nd. Although I don't seem to have recorded it in my records, I am 95% certain that Thomas and Charlotte share a gravestone in Rothersthorpe Church yard and the date is from that. I will have calculated his year of birth either from an age given on the gravestone or from the Census.
I know that his wife was Charlotte. Again I have a date of death at 30 January 1902 ( three days after Thomas - a broken heart or did they both have the same disease?) and burial recorded in the Parish Register on 3 February 1902.
I do not know Charlotte's maiden name nor the date or place of their marriage and I would be very interested to know your source for her previous/maiden name being Smith and the two earlier children.
In the 1871 Census , for the address of 21 The Village, Rothersthorpe, is recorded
Thomas Boyson - Head - M - 53 - Farm Labourer - born Rothersthorpe
Charlotte Boyson - Wife - M - 43 - Labourer's Wife - born Bugbrooke
John Boyson - Son - U- 17 - Stone Miner - born Rothersthorpe
Edward Boyson - Son - 15 - Farm Labourer - born Rothersthorpe
Mary Ann Boyson - Daughter - 11 - Lace Maker - born Rothersthorpe
Emily Boyson - Daughter - 7 - Scholar - born Rothersthorpe
Where we start to differ is with Thomas's father, who I thought was called John. I have him born 9 July 1791 in Rothersthorpe, marrying Hannah Pettifer in 1810 and then Elizabeth Sheppard in 1816, before dying in July 1871. HIS father was (I thought) Thomas (B.1760 and married to Elizabeth Warwick) and his Grandfather Richard Boyson, who died in Gayton in 1789(wife Elizabeth Bates who he married on 5 October 1740). This Richard is as far as I have got back and I have not yet been able to locate his birth.
My family line descends from Edward Boyson (1826 - 1908) who was Thomas's brother, making Thomas my GGG Uncle
As for Thomas, I have siblings John (1821 -1836), Mary (b 1824), Edward (1826-1908), George (1828 - 1900) Sarah (b 1831) Elizabeth (b 1833) and William (b 1836). I have little information on their descendants and again would be very interested in anything that you might know.
I have attached a GEDCOM file with the descendants of Richard Boyson as I understand it.
Look forward to hearing from you
Cheers
Hi David
Thanks very much for your information and Gedcom. Firstly an apology. The father was John, not Thomas - just my confusion.
I am just using Ancestry.co.uk and really it is about making reasonable assumptions but without the certificates etc is even more uncertain than usual. If my nephew wants me to I may do more verifying - he may want to doit himself.I do think, however that the Charlotte Smith assumption is probably correct.
In the 1861 Census for Rothersthorpe, Charlotte is Thomas's wife, aged 34and born in Bugbrooke. Living with them are their children John, Edmund, Jane and Mary Ann (born is Rothersthorpe) but also Elizabeth Smith (12) and Hannah Smith(11) who were born in Bugbrooke and described as Thomas's daughters-in-law.
In the BMD a Thomas Boyson is shown as marrying (Northampton 1837 - 1924 1853 Jan-Mar vol 3b p 153). On the same page is Charlotte Smith.
If we go back again to 1851 in Bugbrooke there is a Charlotte Smith (Head) and a pauper aged 24 and born in Bugbrooke. There are also Elizabeth Smith daughter aged 3 and Hannah Smith daughter aged 9(?) months. I cannot make out if Charlotte is unmarried or a widow.
I hope that this is some small help in return for all the information that you have sent me. If I come up with anything which I think may be of use to you I will of course e-mail it to you.
Hello David,
Yes, I agree that the evidence for Charlotte being born Smith sounds logical and convincing, so thanks for that info. Do keep in touch if you or your nephew want any other help or can pass on useful info. As I said, there aren't many of us interested in the Boysons. Are you anywhere near Northampton? I split my time between Lincolnshire and Leicester but I haven't been able to get to the County Records Office in Northampton for some time. However, should I do so in the future I will try and remember to ask if there is anything that you want checking.
Regards
David
