Salmon Smith was born in Whately, Adams County, Massachusetts, on Oct. 8 1812 and was baptised in Whatley. He married Eliza Fletcher Feb. 22, 1843 in Pownal, VT. After he and his wife moved west he identified as a Vermonter, giving it as his birth place. It is worth pointing out that Pownal, VT and Whately, MA are less than 70 miles apart on the current highway system. The reasons for his choices are hopefully not lost to history.
In 1870 he and Eliza lived in Kasson, Dodge County, Minnesota, where she preceded him in death in 1876.
