Biography

1776 Project
Private John Smith served with Virginia Militia during the American Revolution.

To no great surprise there is a lot of conflicting information which probably comes from a variety of John Smiths.

Working backwards from his will, we can identify his children and we have dates for some of their births.

It appears from most sources that he arrived in Alabama from Amherst Co., Virginia, but the census data shows a John Smith still in Amherst County after he's known to be in Alabama. Maybe the 1810 and 1820 censuses in Virginia are his son or a nephew?

John Smith served in the Amherst Co., Virginia Militia in 1781.

There are sources that say he was a Sargent in the South Carolina Line, but the DAR info that he was a Private in the Amherst Co, Virginia militia is more consistent with him being from Amherst Co. I think that's confusion with a different John Smith.

There are a variety of birthdates and years listed for him. There's a marker at the Smith Cemetery that says 1754-1841, but it was put up in 1976. The date used here (7 Oct 1754) comes from a transcript of a family bible.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with John by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with John:
