Mercy Smith, who died about 1700, was the first wife of Benjamin Clarke of South Kingstown, Rhode Island. She is identified as a daughter of John Smith and his wife Margaret of Prudence Island, Rhode Island. Evidence for her parentage comes from the will of Daniel Smith of Portsmouth, Rhode Island, made 13 May 1695 and proved 15 July 1707, which bequeathed to his "sister Mercy Clarke, wife of Benjamin Clarke, of Kingstown, one-half of what was bequeathed me by my stepfather, John Snook, after my mother's decease."[1][2] Her date and place of birth are not recorded.
Mercy Smith and Benjamin Clarke married by 1692, when their daughter Mary was born. Their children, all born at Kingstown, included the following:[3]

↑ Morrison, The “Clarke” Families of Rhode Island, identifies only Sarah Benjamin, and Emanuel; Glazier and Dorsey both identify the others.

Eldridge, "Benjamin Clarke of Plainfield, Connecticut" (1932). Quotation:
Benjamin Clark (1663-1750) resided at South Kingstown, Rhode Island and Plainfield Connecticut. A detailed study by William H. Eldridge, "Benjamin Clarke of Plainfield, Conn." in the Library of the New England Historic Genealogical Society opines English birth. He was apparently not connected with the Clarks of Medfield, Mass. By his first wife, Mercy Smith, he had: Mary, Sarah, Benjamin, Emanuel, Samuel and Jeremiah; by his second wife Jean or Jane (maiden name possibly Dean) he had: Theophilus, James, Ann, Elizabeth, Martha, Hanna, Rest and Abigail. He and his widow each left wills.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Mercy by comparing test results with other carriers of her mitochondrial DNA.
However, there are no known mtDNA test-takers in her direct maternal line.
It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Mercy:
Smith-77295 and Smith-60245 appear to represent the same person because: I suspect this is a duplicate of Mercy (Smith-60245) Clark, but further research will be needed to reconcile dates.
