Fact: Petition to Court of Ordinary (6 Oct 1879) Warren County, Georgia - Martha petitioned the court to place guardianship of her two youngest children with her oldest son, Matthew Harris Ivey. She had been a widow for 14 years. She died 4 years after the petition was granted.
- LNAB: Marriage records indicate her name is Martha Smith or Martha W Smith. The 1880 census has her name transcribed as Umi M Ivey and as Martha Eunice Smith in the 1938 death certificate for Washington Sterling Ivey. However, in the 1927 death certificate for her son, James Thomas Ivey, her name is recorded as Unice Myrick. It's possible that Smith is a previous married name; however, this is only a theory of this contributor with no proof other than the death certificate of J.T. Ivey. The Myrick family was prominent in this area at the time, and preliminary research has not been successful to connect her to that family.
- Parent Suggestion: Ancestry.com keeps suggesting Charles Wesley Ivey (1801-1870) and Cinderella "Cynthia" Seay (1801-1870) as parents for a Martha Smith (1822-1883). This family line has not been followed to rule them out as possible parents.17:16, 1 May 2019 (UTC)
- Possible Son - Sterling Ivey: The 1870 census of Martha E Ivy lists a 15 year old son, named Sterling Ivy, in addition to Washington Ivy, age 12. There are no further records for Sterling, so it is not known if he died young, or if he married and moved away. Further research is needed to determine these unknowns. He is also not listed in the petition to the Court of the Warren County Ordinary.
- Death of her Husband: It's possible her husband died in the Civil War, or as a result of wounds from the war. His DOD is recorded as 29 Apr 1865. In 1862, he enlisted as a Private in Company E, 31st Regiment, Georgia Infantry. Further research is indicated to determine the location and cause of his death, although most family researchers say he died in Warren County, his place of residence all of his life.
