Biography

This profile is part of the Kinman Name Study.
Margaret was a Friend (Quaker)

Margaret was born about 1740, Calvert Co., Maryland. She is the Margaret Kinman named in the will of her mother, Cassandra (Childs) Smith which says: "I Give and bequeath to my Daughter Margarett Kinman the sum of five Shillings Sterling and no more as I have over paid her in her porsion."

She was married on 20 May 1762, Plumstead, Bucks Co., Pennsylvania, to John Kinman. They had 6 children.

Her husband John Kinman died in late 1782 or early 1783. A Quaker committee continuing on the case of Margaret Kinman brought in the following report: "To the monthly meeting of Abington to be held the 28th day of the 4th month 1783 We the committee on the case of Margaret Kinman, Report that we have met and examined into what is become of the effects of her late husband, as reported to by us at last meeting, and find they are in the hands of the trustees of Abington School and yet remain the estate of John Kinman, and we are of the mind that the expence of his widows laying in ought to be paid out of the same, and if there is any more than will defray her expence, we rather advise or recommend that it be paid to the overseers of the poor to defray the expence of his burial or so much thereof as they have expended - all which we submit to the meeting." Abington the 4th month 26th 1783 John Child, Thomas Livezey, Benjamin Hallowett, James Tyson, John Roberts

30 August 1783. Abington monthly meeting: "The friends in the case of Margaret Kinman are continued to extend further care on that account as the matter is not fully vetted."

She is no doubt the female (over age 45) in the 1800 Census of Pennsylvania in the household of Adam Smith (husband of her daughter Amy Kinman), especially since Margaret Kinman is mentioned in the 1805 will of Adam Smith (see below). Margaret is no doubt still living with daughter Amy during the 1810 and 1820 Census:

In 1805 Margaret was a beneficiary in the will of her son-in-law, Adam Smith [1]
